Waltham police offer $5,000 reward for information about random, unprovoked attacks

Waltham police are now offering a $5,000 reward for information about the string of at least 10 random, unprovoked attacks that have been plaguing the city for weeks.

The reward comes after police released videos over the weekend of a man they say is responsible for the “surprise” nighttime attacks that have been terrorizing residents since Nov. 10.
“There is definitely a fear factor in our city right now. We’ve never experienced anything like this,” Det. Sgt. Stephen McCarthy during a press conference Tuesday morning.
“I’d be lying to you if I said I’m not losing sleep at night,” McCarthy said. “This is an awful situation. But I’m very confident that we’re going to work through this and find the people or persons that are responsible for this.”
McCarthy said police do not have a specific suspect in the attacks, but “we do have a couple of persons of interest that we are looking into.”
“To the people that are scared: Although these acts are going on right now, I believe the citizens in Waltham still live in one of the safest communities in the commonwealth, and we will get this done,” McCarthy said.
Waltham police are now offering $5,000 for information about the 10 separate incidents in which men have been assaulted after dark and sometimes hit in the face or head with an object. An 11th victim was reported through the police department’s anonymous tip line, but police said Tuesday that was not yet confirmed.
In all instances, the men were assaulted after dark from behind between 5:30 and 11:30 p.m. Among the victims was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, who was working his route around 5:30 p.m. in the Gardencrest apartment complex off of Middlesex Circle on Nov. 20.
“It was the same characteristics of the attacks that have been happening, but we did not confirm that and we were not able to speak with anyone,” because they did not leave a callback number, McCarthy said.
Some of the victims have been hospitalized, Waltham police Chief Keith MacPherson said.
“There has to be a weapon involved,” MacPherson said, describing “pretty serious injuries” from blunt force trauma that include “orbital and facial fractures, fractured nose, lacerations to the face.”
“We don’t believe it can be just someone’s fist,” he added.
One of the reasons for the monetary reward is the potentially serious nature of the injuries.
“If someone’s struck in the head with a blunt object, a strike alone could cause a serious head injury, as could a fall to the pavement,” MacPherson said. “There’s definitely the potential for serious injury or even death.”
Anyone with information about the incidents can call Waltham police at 781-314-3600 (select option 4) or the anonymous tip line at 781-314-3636.
