When it comes to economy brands, we always look forward to Kia — they historically deliver great new features light years ahead of the competition. In this week’s review, we test Kia’s new Seltos, its compact SUV, and it does just that.
Smaller than the Sportage and bigger than the Niro, the Seltos fits nicely in the lineup utilizing sister brand Hyundai’s Kona chassis. Its all-wheel drive ability as well as 17-inch wheels, LED lights and rear spoiler are all standard.
A solid-riding SUV with a higher-than-average ground clearance over 7 inches, the Seltos is really good both around town and on long trips. Its 1.6L turbo four-cylinder engine has lots of pep in its step coming in at 175 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque and came in zero to 60 mph at just under 7.5 seconds. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is also standard and a lot better than the competition’s continuously variable transmissions.
Heated seats, remote keyless entry, select drive modes, and 18-inch wheels are standard on our S-model while coming in at just over $25K. Aligned with Kia’s great infotainment system that is easy to use for all ages, the 8-inch screen was proportioned correctly for the interior. Seating for the Seltos was slightly uncomfortable and I would consider it to be on the stiff side. It also has spacious cargo room, which came in at 26.6 cu. ft. and 62.8 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded.
Styling for the Seltos is unique as its exterior has a rugged look in the front fascia while its rear fascia looks similar to those of the Hyundai family. Safety features always jump out at me on a Kia and the Seltos is no different. The Seltos has blind-spot collision and avoidance and rear cross traffic collision warnings and avoidance standard.
Pricing is really the Kia’s advantage, with the Seltos starting at just $23,110 for the base LX model.
