Patriots P Jake Bailey, PR Gunner Olszewski named to AP All-Pro team

Patriots punter Jake Bailey and punt returner Gunner Olszewski were named to the Associated Press All-Pro first team on Friday, as special teams captain Matthew Slater made the All-Pro second team.
Bailey led the league in net yards per punt average and was previously named to the Pro Bowl. Olszewski topped all punt returners with a 17.3 yards return average this season, the best in franchise history. The second-year wideout also came close to re-writing the NFL’s record books.
Since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, Olszewski’s single-season return average ranks second behind only Buffalo’s Leodis McKelvin, who averaged 18.7 yards per run-back in 2012. Olszewski gained at least a dozen yards on more than half of his 20 returns. Three covered 50 or more yards, including a touchdown against the Chargers and another score versus the Cardinals called back by penalty.
Colts running back Nyheim Hines ranked second to Olszewski in total punt return yards and return average during the regular season. He covered 11.4 yards per return.
Bailey and Olszewski drove the Pats’ special teams to the league’s No. 1 ranking by DVOA, Football Outsiders’ opponent-and-situation-adjusted metric that also recognized New England as the best punting and punt return team in the league.
In addition to his net yards average, Bailey dropped a higher percentage of his punts inside opponents’ 20-yard line than any other starter. He also added 3.8 yards to his punt average and set a new career best with a 71-yard bomb against the Rams in Week 14. Around his punting duties, Bailey handled all of the Patriots’ kickoffs.
In December, Bailey made the Pro Bowl along with Slater, who was named the ninth time in his career, a league record for special team honors. Slater recorded seven special-teams tackles and helped down several of Bailey’s punts inside the 20. He’s now twice made the AP All-Pro second team around five first-team nods.
Last season, cornerback Stephon Gilmore was the Patriot named to the AP All-Pro team.
