Burstyn’s storied career leads to Oscar buzz for ‘Pieces’

Ellen Burstyn, with six Oscar nominations and one win, is expected to make that seven with the harrowing Netflix drama “Pieces of a Woman,” streaming Friday.
Burstyn’s wealthy, smart and imperious matriarch — naturally she’s named Elizabeth — is domineering to her daughter Martha (Vanessa Kirby) and condescending to Martha’s blue-collar partner, Sean (Shia LaBeouf).
A tragedy during Martha’s home childbirth leaves these three stumbling, unable to get their bearings. Martha shuts down into silence and depression while Elizabeth urges vindictive legal action against the midwife.
Burstyn, a Tony and Emmy winner, discovered that Elizabeth is inspired by Hungarian screenwriter Kata Weber’s own mother. Weber’s husband Kornél Mundruczó is the director.
“Generally, I create my own backstory,” Burstyn, 88, began, adding, “A lot of my character was based on Kata’s family experience. I was able to learn a lot — the aspect of her being born in the Holocaust, having that kind of background.
“For me the metaphor was the first scene that Kata wrote about Elizabeth staging houses. Staging for her friends, not even for money.
“She demonstrated by putting a cushion on the chair. The chair was just a ‘plain chair’ — until she staged it with this cushion. That seemed to me to be a wonderful metaphor of who she is. Which is, ‘Yes! there’s reality. But then there’s what you do with it. That counts. That makes it better.’ ”
Burstyn, a stage and television veteran, won her Best Actress Oscar for “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” a 1974 “women’s picture” that she hired a barely known Martin Scorsese to direct. Her other nominations include the now-classic horror landmark “The Exorcist,” the nightmarish addiction drama “Requiem for a Dream” and her breakthrough role (and first Oscar nomination) in the 1971 black-and-white small town Texas classic “The Last Picture Show.”
“I was a model and one day I decided to be an actress. And, to my surprise, I started my career with a lead on Broadway.”
A dozen years later, her career percolating, Burstyn had a personal crisis.
“I guess I would describe myself as a babe. I was cute, you know, a ‘pretty girl,’ and got those kinds of parts” — until a voice in her head spoke to her.
She enrolled in the Actors Studio, studied with founder Lee Strasberg for seven years and emerged a different, better player.
“I knew my career would change the moment I was doing quality work. And the next time I had an audition, it was for ‘The Last Picture Show.’ ”
The rest, as they say, is history.
