Ski Wednesday: Massachusetts offers several Nordic skiing sites

Even within COVID-19 restrictions, you can head to other New England states to learn and experience Nordic skiing. Rules and restrictions vary from state to state and most require some quarantining.
The good news, should you want to get started in the sport before you cross state lines, is that there are plenty of great spots to learn in Massachusetts itself.
The Western Massachusetts Cross Country Ski Area Association (www.xcskimass.com) is a great place to start.
With five unique spots to learn and ski (and rent equipment), they work as one to offer different settings, feels and experiences.
At Canterbury Farm (https://canterbury-farms.com), you can ski up at 1,600 feet, looking across and down on the beautiful Berkshires. Their 22 kilometers of trails have beginner, intermediate and expert choices. They also offer other outdoor fun like snowshoeing and ice skating.
Maple Corner Farm (www.maplecornerfarm.com) gives you the chance to learn and then ski all around a beautiful farm that’s been operating since 1812. Once a beef and dairy operation, the farm now produces hay, pure maple syrup and maple products and blueberries. It’s like visiting Almanzo Wilder’s farm from “Little House” fame.
Northfield Mountain (www.firstlightpower.com/recreation/?location_id=386) offers 25 miles of trails of all levels, even one that demands an 800-foot climb to “earn your run.” With lots of rentals and a pro staff, they’re ready to help you glide and smile.
Notchview (https://thetrustees.org/place/notchview/) has over 3,000 acres of open space on which you can find miles of classic groomed trails, lots of off piste and plenty of beauty. They offer lessons and rentals, and also skijouring (skiing with dogs), fun to even see while you are out there gliding yourself.
Stump Sprout (www.stumpsprouts.com) is all about woodsy trails, open vistas and fun. The high spot where their four main trails meet is marked with a large rock, and is known as a prime view (and selfie) spot.
Hilltop Orchards is set on 200 acres with beautiful Berkshire views. There are four miles of groomed trails and lots of off piste to explore. The groomed trails glide you through a lovely apple orchard.
The Weston Ski Track (www.skiboston.com) is close to Boston and yet the power of their snowmaking operation means so long as there is cold, you can glide. They offer rentals (even season-long rentals), lessons and more. Should you want to get your Nordic life started and are busy working or going to school, they offer night lessons under the lights.
Great Brook Ski Touring Center in Carlisle (www.greatbrookski.com) is only 25 miles from Boston proper and offers machine-groomed skiing in a lovely setting. Skiers can stride past fields and a working dairy farm on the easy Lantern Loop, venture through the quiet woods around Meadow Pond on the Pine Point Loop, or test their strengths on the hills of the more difficult Woodchuck Trail.
Each center has its COVID-19 rules on their websites. There are deals, too: like the $55 sampler pass from The Western Mass Cross Country Ski Association that gives you access to a day at each of seven resorts for that price.
