No one was injured in the shooting that happened in October near Midway after an argument. A Chicago police officer was arrested Wednesday morning and charged in an off-duty shooting.
No one was injured in the Oct. 13 incident that authorities said took place at 10:03 p.m. in the 5800 block of W. 52nd Street.
Officer Joseph Cabrera was charged with felony aggravated discharge of a firearm and disorderly conduct, according to police and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates allegations of police wrongdoing.
The shooting, which took place outside a couple blocks northwest of Midway Airport in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood, was connected to a verbal and physical altercation between Cabrera and another individual, according to COPA and police.
Police and COPA spokesman Ephraim Eaddy could provide no further details of the encounter.
Cabrera was expected to appear for a bond hearing Wednesday afternoon.
“The officer has been relieved of his police powers and could face additional disciplinary actions pending the outcome of the criminal and administrative investigations,” Chicago police said.
Cabrera, an eight-year veteran, turned himself in just after 6 a.m. at a police station located at 5101 S. Wentworth Ave., police said.
Three days after the shooting, COPA notified the Cook County state’s attorney’s office that a criminal review of the shooting was needed.
COPA planned to publicly release video evidence of the shooting on Dec. 10 — one day inside the city’s 60-day window in which it is required to do so. But prosecutors requested an extension to keep the video private until Friday.
“Absent receipt of a court order, COPA shall facilitate the release of video and other materials in accordance with the city’s video release policy,” COPA said.
COPA is also investigating the actions of responding officers in the aftermath of the shooting.
John Catanzara, head of the Chicago lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, said he hadn’t heard of the charges and needed time to form a response.
A city database shows Cabrera has a police salary of $84,054.
A police spokeswoman said a mugshot of Cabrera was not immediately available.
