Patriots-Jets: Live updates of New England’s season finale

0:09, 3rd quarter: J.C. Jackson with yet another interception, his ninth of the season as Sam Darnold overthrows Breshad Perriman. Jackson returns it 18 yards to the Jets’ 45 and puts the Patriots in prime position to take the lead.
2:22, 3rd quarter: Jakobi Meyers did it again. The quarterback-turned-receiver completes another double-pass trick touchdown, finding Cam Newton wide open for a 19-yard score. It looked almost exactly like the one he threw to Rex Burkhead earlier this season against the Ravens. Josh McDaniels and the Patriots having a little fun in the last game of the season as they tie the game at 14.
That was a nice drive led by Newton, who picked up a couple of first downs with his legs and even found N’Keal Harry twice.
8:25, 3rd quarter: The injuries keep coming for the Patriots today. Adam Butler, who recorded a sack a play earlier, left the game after getting hurt.
9:07, 3rd quarter: Cam Newton converts a third down on a pass to Sony Michel, but again, the Patriots can’t sustain a drive after Newton’s pass down the seam to Devin Asiasi is thrown behind him, forcing another punt.
Damiere Byrd left the game after taking a hard hit from Neville Hewitt.
11:40, 3rd quarter: Tough start to the second half for the Patriots defense as the Jets drive down easily for a go-ahead touchdown. Breshad Perriman’s 53-yard catch-and-run was a killer before Josh Adams’ one-yard score put the Jets on top.
New York leads 14-7 early in the third quarter.
Halftime: Patriots 7, Jets 7.
The Patriots started strong with a touchdown on the opening drive, but Cam Newton and the offense couldn’t sustain drives the rest of the half. Newton is 12-for-19 for 129 yards and one passing touchdown to go along with four carries for 54 yards.

HALF: #Patriots 7, #Jets 7
The Pats rolled to an 84-yard opening-drive TD and have since … punted four times.

Only 30 minutes to go in the Patriots’ season, and possibly Newton’s tenure in New England.
0:38, 2nd quarter: It looked promising that the Patriots could drive into field goal range before the end of the half, as Cam Newton delivered a pair of first-down passes to Jakobi Meyers, but three consecutive incompletions ended the drive quickly.
1:40, 2nd quarter: A strong drive led by Sam Darnold concludes with the game-tying touchdown, as the quarterback delivers a perfect ball to Will Herndon for a 21-yard score. Myles Bryant is flagged for an unnecessary roughness penalty with a helmet-to-helmet hit on Herndon has he was making the catch.
5:47, 2nd quarter: Cam Newton finds some success in the passing game with a pair of first-down completions to James White, but the drive stalls again. Newton overthrew White, and then he’s sacked completely out of field goal range to force the Patriots to punt.
9:34, 2nd quarter: Facing an unlikely third-and-19, Cam Newton finds Jakobi Meyers at the sticks. It’s initially ruled shy of a first down, but after Bill Belichick challenges the spot, it’s overturned. Meyers was about a half-yard past the marker when he caught it. First down, Patriots.
10:05, 2nd quarter: There’s Chase Winovich again. He breaks through for his second sack of the day, bringing Sam Darnold down for a loss of eight on third down.
The Patriots take the ball at their own 24 after Terrence Brooks’ illegal block on the punt.
12:30, 2nd quarter: Jakobi Meyers’ first catch of the day is a 13-yard completion where he makes a nice spin move for the first down. But the Patriots can’t add to it. Cam Newton probably could have tucked and run for a first down on third-and-5, but his pass for Damiere Byrd is incomplete.
Jets ball at their own 10.
0:00, 1st quarter: Big sack from Chase Winovich, who takes down Sam Darnold for nine yards and sets back the Jets, who have to punt. Winovich’s playing time has been inconsistent this season, but he’s been effective when he plays. He’s now up to 4.5 sacks.
4:22, 1st quarter: Rookie tight end Devin Asiasi hasn’t had a ton of opportunity this season for a variety of reasons, but he picks up a first down as Cam Newton finds him for 13 yards.
Unfortunately for the Patriots, they couldn’t keep it going. Jake Bailey boots it 47 yards as the Jets take over.
7:02, 1st quarter: Good stop for the Patriots defense, as J.C. Jackson snuffs out a screen and Sam Darnold is forced into consecutive incompletions. Cam Newton and the Patriots take over at their own 9.
9:24, 1st quarter: Patriots linebacker Adrian Phillips is down and injured after a play. The Pats were already thin at linebacker, where Phillips has been solid all season.
11:23, 1st quarter: Like last week against the Bills, the Patriots put together a strong first drive on offense. This time, it results in a touchdown as Cam Newton hits James White for a 7-yard score.
The running game carried the Pats there, highlighted by Newton’s 49-yard keeper that put them in the red zone. Sony Michel also continued his recent hot streak with four touches for 43 yards.

.@CameronNewton’s 49-yard run is the longest by a Patriots QB in franchise history.

Cam Newton’s 49-yard run on that drive set two #Patriots records:– Longest run by a QB.– Most rushing yards by a QB in a single season.
— Andrew Callahan (@_AndrewCallahan) January 3, 2021

The touchdown was the Patriots’ first passing score in 13 quarters.
Pregame: It’s time for one last stand.
The Patriots will have two healthy inside linebackers for today’s season finale against the Jets: Ja’Whaun Bentley and sixth-round rookie Cassh Maluia. Bentley returns after a 1-game absence, while Maluia hasn’t taken a defensive snap as a pro. Outside linebacker Shilique Calhoun and defensive tackle Lawrence Guy are also back in the front seven.
Most of the 16 players listed as questionable on the team’s injury report are available today, though the offensive line is in rough shape without starting center David Andrews and right guard Shaq Mason.
The Patriots are looking to end a three-game losing streak today and finish their worst season in 20 years at 7-9.
Both teams’ complete inactives are below.

CB Dee Virgin
