Ring in the New Year (safely) with style

Remember that scene in “When Harry Met Sally,” when Harry wonders what the heck the song “Auld Lang Syne” actually means? Well, most of us still don’t know.
The New Year’s Eve tune, traditionally sung by happily inebriated crowds right as the year changes at midnight, is indeed a mystery to many. Originally written in 18th century Scots language by the famed Scottish poet Robert Burns, its words might be confusing, but the message is simple: basically, that we shouldn’t forget old friends and years gone past.
That said, this year may be the first one in modern times that no one wants to remember. In fact, just about everyone really, really wants to forget about it. Kick it to the curb in fact.
But even after the worst year ever, we still need to celebrate somehow. Actually, we desperately need to celebrate, because we made it through. So grab a couple of cocktail glasses and get ready to mix something up (preferably something chic that contains bubbly, like the recipe below) at home — whether it’s on your own, with a bubble friend or two, or the family.
And then jump on that Zoom call you’ve set up with all the folks you’d normally spend the night with, to raise a glass of this easily made concoction together, and congratulate each other for enduring 2020.

POMEGRANATE CRANBERRY SPARKLER
You can use real Champagne if you like, but one of the nicest things about this tasty libation is that Prosecco works just as nicely, so you don’t have to splurge.
Makes about 5 servings
1 bottle Prosecco
1/2 c. Grand Marnier or Cointreau
1 can San Pellegrino’s Melograno e Arancia (pomegranate and orange)
1 can ginger beer (or, in a pinch, a can of ginger ale)
1 can soda water
1/2 c. cranberry juice
In a large pitcher, mix all the ingredients.
Serve it in a vintage coupe glass, a martini glass or a champagne glass, and garnish with cranberries, orange wedges  and sprigs of rosemary.
Here’s to 2021!
