Police arrest San Mateo man suspected of car theft, following charges of package theft days earlier

SAN MATEO – San Mateo police on Wednesday arrested a man suspected of car theft, after the man had been arrested days earlier on suspicion of stealing packages, police said.
Around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, officers were patrolling the 100 block of West Hillsdale Boulevard, which police described as a recent crime hot spot. Officers checked the DMV record for a suspicious vehicle and discovered that it had been reported stolen out of San Mateo on Dec. 20.
Officers arrested the solo occupant of the vehicle on suspicion of car theft and found drug paraphernalia on the suspect during a search.
The suspect was identified as 25-year-old San Mateo resident David Benedicrivas, who was arrested on suspicion of car theft and possessing drug paraphernalia.
In order to comply with COVID-19 regulations, officers issued a felony citation and Benedicrivas was released with a promise to appear in court.

Citing “chronic issues and crime trends requiring extra attention from officers,” San Mateo police have increased enforcement efforts in the 100 block of West Hillsdale Boulevard. Police said that crime is now trending down in the area due to collaboration with the community.
Police encouraged people to do their part to help solve crime by locking car doors, stowing valuables out of sight and calling 911 to report criminal activity. People can also register street-facing video security cameras (such as video doorbells) via the San Mateo Police Department’s Neighborhood Eyes Security Team.
