Gophers in the NFL: Gift to Mike Sherels commemorates his players in league

Mike Sherels’ track record as the Gophers’ linebackers coach was given an artistic flourish this holiday season. As a gift, Sherels received a painting from local artist Ryan Fors featuring players coached by Sherels who went to the NFL.
‘It’s sweet,” Sherels texted the Pioneer Press. “I love it.”
Of the 13 former Gophers players in the NFL this season, five are linebackers whom Sherels recruited and developed at Minnesota. Sherels was on the U staff from 2011-16.
Those current NFL linebackers are Chiefs’ Damien Wilson, Cardinals’ De’Vondre Campbell, Jets’ Blake Cashman, Giants’ Carter Coughlin and Packers’ Kamal Martin. The artwork also includes Jon Celestin, who was briefly with the Falcons.
Sherels also called the gift from the Campbell family “one of the most thoughtful/amazing gifts I’ve ever received,” he tweeted Sunday. “Still speechless.”
Before Wilson was drafted in 2015, and Campbell in 2016, the Gophers hadn’t had linebackers taken in consecutive NFL drafts since 1981-82. Minnesota has done it again with Cashman in 2019, and Martin and Coughlin in 2020.
Three of those former U linebackers played in the league last weekend, with Campbell having five tackles in a loss to the 49ers, Martin logging one tackle in a win over the Titans and Coughlin receiving playing time on defense and special teams in a loss to the Ravens. Cashman and Wilson have been sidelined by injuries.
In 2016, Sherels overcame a near-death experience and later won a $1 million settlement from the University of Minnesota relating to his care at a U hospital. The Rochester, Minn., native and former Gophers player said his main focus now is being a husband to wife Emily and a father to their four young children.
