Keep botched police raid in a larger and fairer perspective

Police body camera video shows the raid on the home of Anjanette Young. | CBS 2 Chicago

The Chicago Police conduct about 1,500 searches with search warrants a year. How many are at the wrong address? One is too many, but mistakes do happen. The police raid on the home of Anjanette Young was atrocious, but let’s please put this news story — as we should all news stories — in the proper perspective. The Chicago Police Department has said it conducts about 1,500 searches with search warrants a year. Well, how many are at the wrong address? Sure, one is too many, but mistakes do happen.
Compare this, to gain perspective, to cases of medical malpractice. According to the American Medical Association, some 17,000 medical malpractice lawsuits are filed each year. How many of those suits are filed in Chicago? Which hospitals and doctors are involved? How many people die or are disabled?
Where are the news stories about all of that?
As a society, we are not perfect. We all need to improve; every profession needs to improve. But let’s not throw gasoline on a barely smoldering fire.

No Trump at Biden inauguration
Donald Trump should stay away from the Jan. 20 inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. We already know all about Trump’s reluctance to take part in a peaceful transfer of power. His presence at this sacred American rite would only distract from the ceremony and the relief most Americans will feel when the office of the president is once again put in deserving and capable hands.

Shut down or pay a price
I am dismayed that several restaurants and bars here in the western suburbs are ignoring Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s plea to not serve food or beverages indoors. They are blatantly open for business as usual. Why are they being allowed to stay open, endangering customers and staff, and not suffering consequences? Because they are ignoring the governor’s orders, they should not be allowed to receive any federal COVID-19 relief funding, and their licenses should be suspended or revoked.
