Lawrence General receives $250,000 donation after man credits hospital team with saving his life

An Andover man, who credits Lawrence General Hospital’s Emergency Center team with saving his life, and his wife have given the hospital a major donation to “help Lawrence General care for as many people as possible in the same way.”
Charlie and Elizabeth Daher have donated $250,000 to help fund the construction of a new Dedicated Treatment Unit at the hospital’s Emergency Center.
Charlie Daher recently suffered a heart attack and was treated at Lawrence General’s Emergency Center. His chest was pounding, and when doctors noticed a fast and irregular heartbeat, they decided to shock him — which was key in treating the potentially dangerous heartbeat.
“I firmly believe that if not for them, the right place at the right time, I wouldn’t be here right now,” Daher said in a Lawrence General video.
The new Dedicated Treatment Unit will help the hospital rapidly evaluate, assess and treat patients with low- to mid-acuity medical complaints — while also increasing capacity for the patients with critical-care needs such as stroke, heart attack and trauma.
“The fact is we have one of the busiest emergency centers in New England and thanks to this profoundly generous gift from Charlie and Elizabeth Daher, our ability to deliver emergency care is about to be greatly enhanced,” Deborah Wilson, president and CEO at Lawrence General Hospital, said in a statement. “With this Daher family donation, Lawrence General is able to move forward with a new Dedicated Treatment Unit in our Emergency Center.
“This innovative advancement not only allows us to increase space and efficiency, but thanks to the Daher family’s kindness, it will help advance the hospital and allow our dedicated team to build on the outstanding care they provide for people here in the Merrimack Valley each and every day,” she added.

Daher, who was born at Lawrence General, said he views the donation as a way to both help his community and support the care team at the hospital.
“They saved my life, and we want to help Lawrence General care for as many people as possible in the same way they cared for me,” Daher said. “Elizabeth and I chose to make such a major gift because I know this donation will have an equally profound and positive impact for Lawrence General Hospital and the people of our community. For me, there’s nothing more rewarding than giving back and helping the people in our community.”
