Ticker: Food bank expanding into New England; McDonald’s releases Spam and Oreo ‘burger’ in China

An organization that this year will distribute $350 million worth of food to locations around the United States is moving into New England.
Midwest Food Bank is exploring facility options in Hartford, Conn., to serve relief agencies and food pantries throughout the six New England states, it announced Monday. The organization currently distributes food from facilities in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, and Texas and international facilities in Africa and Haiti.
The faith-based nonprofit said one in six people in Connecticut are struggling with food insecurity, compared to one in eight people before the COVID-19 pandemic. They said they distribute food “without cost” to more than 2,000 nonprofit partners and social services agencies in the U.S.
Midwest Food Bank President and CEO David Kieser is leading the effort and Joseph Koch, Maxine Schneider, Heather Summers, and Brent Walder have been named to the group’s New England divisional board.
“We are thankful to have a strong local team leading this effort,” said Kieser. “We plan to leverage our national footprint by serving those in need with dignity and compassion.”
McDonald’s sells ‘Spam burger’ topped with Oreo cookies in China
McDonald’s is selling a sandwich made of Spam topped with crushed Oreo cookies Monday in China in an attention-grabbing move that has raised eyebrows.
“I thought it was delicious,” said a comment signed Feifei Mao Enthusiast on the Sina Weibo microblog service. “Is that because I love McDonald’s too deeply? Or is something wrong with my taste?”
The sandwich is made of two slices of Spam, a product of Hormel Foods LLC, and Mondelez International’s Oreo cookies, topped with mayonnaise.
McDonald’s Corp. said the sandwich was part of a series of “members only” promotions to be released on Mondays in China.
McDonald’s said it planned to sell no more than 400,000 of the “Lunchmeat Burgers.” It wasn’t clear how many have been sold or how many people who flooded social media with scathing comments had eaten one.
