State reports 1,009 new coronavirus cases in Massachusetts schools, highest case count ever

A total of 1,009 staff and students in Massachusetts schools have tested positive for the coronavirus in the past week, breaking last week’s all time high case count of 923, according to data from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The weekly report posted on Thursdays shows 591 students and 418 staff tested positive for the coronavirus from Dec. 10 to Dec. 16, according to DESE.
This week’s tally represents an increase of 86 cases from last week and is the highest case count reported so far this year as coronavirus cases continue to surge in Massachusetts.
Since the beginning of the school year which kicked off 12 weeks ago, a total of 5,095 cases have been reported in Massachusetts schools, according to DESE.
There are an estimated 450,000 students in public school buildings and 75,000 staff across the state.
The report includes the number of positive COVID-19 cases as reported to DESE by school districts including charter schools and collaboratives.
The number of positive cases for students includes those engaged in hybrid or in-person learning models, not remote.
Reported positive staff cases include those who have been in a district building within the seven days prior to the report of the positive case.
Districts with the most cases in the past week include 42 cases in New Bedford, 20 cases in Quincy, 19 cases each in Peabody, Plymouth and Shrewsbury.
Boston Public Schools, which recently invited 1,700 high needs students back into the classroom on Dec. 14, has reported a total of 64 cases so far this year, and the DESE report shows one student case and eight staff cases in BPS in the last week.
