Coronavirus Thursday update: Minnesota surpasses 5 million tests

Minnesota has now screened more than 5 million samples for the coronavirus from 2.8 million residents since March when the COVID-19 pandemic began.
There were 47,569 test results reported Thursday and 2,775 of those were positive, according to the state Department of Health. That represents a rebound in testing numbers after several days of decline.
There have been 389,171 cases of the coronavirus diagnosed statewide. More than 358,000 people have recovered enough to no longer require isolation.
Another 83 fatalities were reported Thursday, bringing the death toll to 4,658. So far, there have been seven days in December when more than 80 COVID-19 deaths were reported.
Those whose deaths were reported Thursday ranged from their 20s to more than 100-years-old. Fifty-two lived in long-term care facilities, 30 in private homes and one in a group home.
Hospitalizations continue a three-week decline from a late November peak. There are 1,222 patients hospitalized, including 289 in critical condition.
Since March, more than 20,000 Minnesotans have needed hospital care and 4,353 have spent time in intensive care.
